What is powder coating?
Powder coating is a dry coating process that has gained popularity since its introduction in North America in the 1960s. Powder coating accounts for more than 15% of the total industrial coating market and is used on a wide range of products. How Powder Coating Works？
Powder coating is a solid coating system with polymer resin as the main component. Its formula usually includes curing agent, pigment, leveling agent and various functional additives. In the production process, these raw materials are melted and mixed at high temperature, cooled and solidified, and then finely ground to form a uniform powder product with a physical form similar to flour.
The coating is mainly applied by electrostatic spray deposition technology (ESD). In specific operations, a special spray gun causes the powder particles to be electrostatically charged. These charged particles are uniformly adsorbed on the grounded metal workpiece surface under the action of the electric field. After spraying, the workpiece needs to be sent to the curing furnace for heat treatment. During this process, the coating undergoes a cross-linking and curing reaction to form a high-density polymer film layer with a three-dimensional network structure. This structure gives the coating excellent mechanical strength and durability.
In addition to metal substrates, this technology can also be applied to the surface treatment of non-metallic materials such as plastics and medium-density fiberboard. Another common coating method is the fluidized bed process: the workpiece is preheated and then immersed in the fluidized powder. The molten powder then forms a uniform coating on the surface of the workpiece. Depending on the material properties, secondary curing may be required.
